Save Our Waterfalls- Kanching Rawang 19th Apr 2009

MEDIA RELEASE by Zalina Mohd Som

RAWANG, Apr 19 – A total of 300 volunteers sacrificed their Sunday and joined hands to help clean Kanching Waterfalls, one of Selangor’s premier waterfall in a gotong royong campaign yesterday. Organised by Waterfall Survivors, a social group created on Facebook the most popular social online network, the Save Our Waterfalls (SOWs) Campaign was symbolically flagged off by Selangor State Tourism Action Council chairman Datuk Subahan Kamal. Most of the volunteers were registered members of the online group, while others were members of the public. Kanching Waterfalls was the first waterfall, the group made after its inception on Facebook in July 2008. Then during its second trip, the group found the quality of the seven-tier Kanching Waterfall dwindled – thanks to irresponsible visitors.

Unkempt facilities and sightings of unofficial dumpsites at the waterfall were the factors that prompted the group to organise the campaign. In her welcome note, Waterfall Survivors chairman Ms Joe Yap Wei Lea said : “The event is aimed to create awareness among the public on the importance of preserving our natural heritage, especially the Waterfalls, for our children.” “SOWs will be our brand in promoting Waterfalls conservation and we plan to make this event our main public event which will be held at any other waterfalls in the country,” she added.

The SOWs Kanching Waterfalls campaign was officially endorsed by Selangor Tourism Action Council with supports from Tourism Malaysia, Tourism Selangor Sdn Bhd and Malaysia Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA). It also received cooperation from other organisations like Jabatan Kesihatan Negeri Selangor, Jabatan Hutan Negeri Selangor, Jabatan Pertahanan Awam, Jabatan Bomba Dan Penyelamat and Polis DiRaja Malaysia. The SOWs Kanching Waterfalls campaign was sponsored by KEEN Footwear as its OFFICIAL Footwear, World of Sports, Lafuma, Bacfree, Mahumas Sdn Bhd and Pansing Marketing Sdn Bhd.

The seven-tier Kanching Waterfalls is rated as one of Selangor’s premier waterfalls and it has been a favourite hang-out for locals, especially during weekends and public holidays.
