Say No to Styrofoam/Polystyrene Food Container

Styrofoam food container are made out of polystyrene. It will emit Benzene and Styrene into the air and more importantly into our hot food and drinks when the hot food/drinks contacts with the container.

Health E

Benzene: The major effect of benzene from long-term (1 year or longer) exposure is on the blood. The benzene is a known human carcinogen (the ability to cause cancer). Eating or drinking foods containing high level of benzene can caues vomiting, irritation of stomach, dizziness, sleepiness, convulsions, rapid heart rate and even death.

Styrene: Styrene is also possibly carcinogenic to humans (caused cancer). It can disrupt normal hormone function, possibly contributing to thyroid problems, menstrual irregularities, breast cancer and prostate cancer. Long term explosure to styrene also suspected to cause low platelet count or hemoglobin values, chromosomal and lymphatic abnormalities, neurotoxic effect the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves, sleeping problem, acute or chronic health problem associates with the nervous system.

Environment Effect

Polystyrene food packaging is causing serious pollution especially in the ocean. It is lightweight and easily blown into the drains, rivers and into the ocean. we use styrofoam food container for one time of a few minutes and it takes hundreds even thousands of years to dispose. It also kill alot of marine wildlife because it mimics food and the marine wildlife such as turtles and sea birds will ate it and choking to death or starvation as it is indigestible. Polystyrene food container is not able to recycle and reusable. Plastic industry has attempted to recycle polystyrene but it cause thousands of dollars per ton. There are 28 countries and 90 cities were banned the usage of such food container.

- Use ceramic or paper plates/bowls/mugs/cup

- Never microwave or heat food in polystyrene container.
- Buy food without polystyrene container when possible.

Labour Day at Waterfalls

Waterfall Survivors members started a early drive all the way to Jerantut. We stopped for brunch at 10.30am in Jerantut town before heading to Lata Meraung.P5010199A well maintained park which is only 10 minutes from the carpark. The Lata Meraung is not a big fall but idyllic. With a pool that is not deep. Worth a visit if happen to be in Jerantut town. But do not expect a BIG FANTASTIC waterfall.

Not many people was there that morning. The water volume was not much but the falls still looks nice with a wading pool.P5010201 After some dipping in the pool and hydro massage, we decided to leave Jerantut and drop by Sg Dua Waterfalls a.k.a. Lata Khong on the way back

Driving along the familiar road, the river is visible. OH GOSH.. why is the water so milky??P5010211When we reach the waterfalls, it was packed with families and small groups. We checked with the locals if there’s any illegal logging happening that made the water so milky. Phew… Thank god. No logging. The locals told us that it has been raining everyday for the past few days. This explains the reason the water is milky.

We cross the river. The current is stronger than usual. And it’s deeper too. P5010210

Too many people. So no one swim at the falls. Well… practically also because the water was so milky. Not inviting like usual.

We rested there for about 30 minutes. Had our late lunch and left back to KL.P5010214

We will do a visit again to Sg Dua Waterfalls again soon. Really miss the clear, refreshing water at this falls.

WS @ Templer’s Park (2/5/10)

We all gathered at Petronas Ampang along MRR 2 in the morning. Then we all proceeded for breakfast at Steven’s Corner. We later proceeded to Templer’s Park after breakfast.

We started our trekking at about 10am. A very eye sore thing that we saw was there’s so many rubbish thrown along the side of the tar road that heads to the pool. These irresponsible picnickers which doesn’t know how to take care of mother nature. P5020737 Templer

We continued our trek. And came to the pool. Not many people at the pool. We continued our trekking all the way to the main falls.P5020739 Templer P5020743 Templer The were quite some rubbish strewn along the way. Rubbish bins which are full and no one taking away the rubbish and rubbish surrounding the bins. Sad… :(P5020756 Templer We all settle down at the main falls at Templer’s. Everyone is so so excited. Some settled at the side of the falls to have their lunch. Some of us could not resist the cool water and settle down for a hydro massage. P5020765 Templer The cool water is so so refreshing. The cascade of course not too high but impressive. P5020830 Templer We all left the falls after an hour plus. And proceeded for lunch. A short hike to the waterfalls with a nice cascade. The only sad thing is the rubbish that are strewn along the trail and along the picnic areas.
