One of the BEST Waterfall Hunter in Malaysia. In Our Loving Memory - HARRY NIAN HOI CHONG 18 May 1962 - August 2012

Today we have lost a very special person. A person who is gifted so much in exploring the nature, a person who has very good memory of trails, a helpful, wonderful person. He is also one of the people in Malaysia who has been to countless waterfalls and exploring into new waterfall on Solo expedition or sometimes with his partner in crime Lim Siang Hui.

Harry was one of our committee in the past. I personally got to know Harry about 4 years ago during our first Waterfall clean up in Kanching. Since then, he followed and leaded many of Waterfall Survivors trips till he left Waterfall Survivors in 2010 to pursue his own exploration.

Harry has brought so much laughter, fun and excitements to all the members of Waterfall Survivors during his voluntary service with us.

I have not met Harry for a year plus till last 11th August during the departure for Jerangkang trip which he joined WS. I still remember that morning he was as usual, with his mouth full stuffed with the Mcd's Breakfast Muffin and gave me a big hug when we met. He told me he will continue to Terengganu after the 2days 1night with WS in Jerangkang and will be exploring some waterfalls in Terengganu Region for 3 weeks.

I told him to come back with more new falls for us to explore and wished all the best in the 3 weeks exploration.

I received the news today that Harry have left us. He was last contacted last Friday 17th August with Siang Hui. And also gave Siang Hui a waterfall coordinate. Then after there was no news from him.

Harry was found this morning 25th August after more than a week, somewhere nearby the last coordinate that he gave Siang Hui.

It is a shocking news to all of us. To everyone of us that knew him.

I couldn't imagine that 11th August was the last time I get to hug Harry and see his laughter and smile. If we ever knew that he will never return this time, I guess none of us will ever let him go on this Solo Expedition to Terengganu.

Harry, we will never forget all the laughter, fun and excitements and all your stories that you've shared with us in the past.

We will always miss you. Please look after all of the waterfall lovers and hunters from heaven above.

REST IN PEACE HARRY, THE MASTER OF WATERFALLS OF MALAYSIA.

SEE HUA DAILY

Group spreads anti-litter message with high fives

By QISHIN TARIQ
qishin.tariq@thestar.com,my

KUALA LUMPUR: Shoppers looking for bargains along Bukit Bintang got hugs and high fives instead, thanks to an anti-litter campaign.

President and founder of Waterfall Survivors Joe Yap Wei Lea, 33, said the group wanted to spread the idea of not littering by combining it with hugs and high fives.

“We call it loving ME', we spread the message of loving yourself by loving Mother Earth.

“Though we usually focus on cleaning waterfall areas, we figured since picnickers come from the city, educating the public should begin there,” Yap said.

She added that littering was a serious problem no matter where it happens as garbage in the city clogs drains and would eventually end up in the rivers and seas.

Waterfall Survivors project consultant Webster Ku, 27, said he got the free hugs idea after hearing a talk by Helping Angels founder Poesy Liang about the concept of “paying it forward”.

“By hugging people and getting them to pay it forward, it becomes a more memorable way to spread the message of keeping our streets clean,” he said, jokingly adding that people should avoid picking up litter and hugging at the same time.

Ku said locals are not always comfortable with being hugged, so they also decided to give high fives.

“Whether it's hugs or high fives, I think we could do with spreading the love in view of all the anger and hate going around recently,” he said.

Volunteer Jasmin Zulkifli, 15, said giving hugs was awkward at first but became easier as she realised people were receptive to the idea.

“It also helps to have a signboard and a shirt saying free hugs,” said the middle school student who was among six volunteers taking part in the walk at Bukit Bintang here yesterday.

Waterfall Survivors would be organising a similar event today at 7pm in front of the McDonalds in SS2, Petaling Jaya. For more information, visit www.waterfallsurvivors.blogspot.com.

Source: http://www.chinapress.com.my/node/312825
23/04/2012 17:50

300 volunteers clean up waterfall on Earth Day

PETALING JAYA: About 300 people spent their Sunday morning doing their bit for nature in conjunction with Earth Day.

Volunteers from the Save Our Waterfalls cleaned up a 2.5km stretch of Templer's Park waterfall and picnic areas in Rawang yesterday.

President and founder of Waterfall Survivors Joe Yap said the fourth Earth Day celebration focused on education.

Doing their bit for nature: Participants cleaning up Templer’s Park waterfall in Rawang Sunday.

“This time we not only cleaned up but also raised awareness on why cleanliness is important,” she said, adding that government agencies should look into the lack of cleanliness at many spots in the country.

Waterfall Survivors is an organisation that advocates back to nature activities.
Participant Matthias Gelber said every day should be like Earth Day.

“We need to ask ourselves: Are we a part of the problem or the solution?'” said Gelber, who was dubbed the Greenest Man on Earth in 2008.

The campaign was supported and endorsed by the state government and Forestry Department, along with the Selayang Municipal Council and other corporate bodies.

Clean Planet – how shall we get there?

Source from http://www.letsdoitworld.org/cleanplanet

Clean Planet – how shall we get there?

Each cleanup action is one huge step towards clean planet. World Cleanup 2012 brings those efforts together. But we are not fooling ourselves – some more big steps need to be made to get us there. And there is no group, organization or country who is able to complete these alone.

We have arrived to a doorstep where we need to come together to pass through. So here is our vision, how we can come together and turn things around on this planet. These steps we need to make:

Education and awareness

Everythings begins with thought and with personal choice – we need to become more aware about the effects of our everyday lifestyles, of our everyday decisions. This begins with education in schools, but most importantly – with talking to our family members, friends, colleagues. If you know it, share it.

Ecologically intelligent consumption

Each one of us can make a big difference just by becoming more aware about our choices as a consumer – to buy less, to favor products that have been produced without harming the environment and always using any chance to give new life to already used products. If more and more of us start to make those choices, the whole production chain will transform. Be smart, make a difference.

Sustainable design and production

The choices that we have are born not in the store, but in the heads of the designers and producers. The whole production process must be reformed to follow the nature’s spirit – using environmentally safe materials and production processes, designing products to be used longer and to be recycled. Cradle to cradle is taking the lead now, it’s time to follow. Nature is our best teacher.

Tax reform favoring sustainable products and services

We need to design some very specific ways to support conscious choises on every level, choises that benefit us all in the long run. Talk is not enough. We need to put our money where our mouth is.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Respect yourself, enjoy and appreciate what you already have and you will discover that you don’t need that much stuff to begin with. Sometimes your old is someone else’s new and vice versa. Look for creative and innovative ways to give new life to old and used things. Buy less, use longer and use again.

Cooperation between people

Sharing ideas and best practises makes us wiser. One can change the world if he or she is able to share the dream and invites others along. Thus we believe that cooperation is the only way forward. It begins with friends and families and follows with communities, countries, groups and organisations. Each one of us is needed to make this happen.
